Week 169-170: An Ordinary Day

Expat life is a double life. One side is full of spontaneity and exotic destinations. The other side is overtaken by mundane, ordinary tasks. The past two weeks were the latter.

Weeks 169 and 170 were a culmination of relaxing nights at home, sunsets from our window, watching new Netflix shows, practicing German on Duo Lingo, trips to the grocery store, softball practices starting back up, and a stop at Offensee for a snowy walk with the pups.

If you’re ever curious about what our lives look like when we are not flying off to another country or climbing up a mountain, this week is a chance to satisfy your curiosity. Our video also serves as a reminder that even in the absence of grand adventures, there is a joy to be found in the ordinary moments

The video was inspired by a popular YouTuber and film director, Danny Gevirtz.

Since moving abroad and documenting all of our travels, filmmaking has inevitably made its way into my life. While photography has always been a passion, videography has crept up on me. Working as an Art Director in advertising, I am familiar with developing scripts for TV commercials. It takes tons of planning, hours of ideating, and months of finessing, presenting, and testing before ever being considered to go into production––if the script idea makes it that far. Getting to make a video was almost a novelty most of the time, so for the past 3.5 years, making videos every week without anyone else’s opinions has been thrilling and freeing. It also allowed me to improve my editing skills by working with more Adobe Creative programs.

Over the past 170 weeks, we have made 144 videos and have seen a huge difference in the quality of our weekly films. However, the videos I put together are simply montages that miraculously come together after hours in Adobe Premier. I never plan a shot list, scout locations, or have a storyline to follow. Whatever we see is what I shoot. It’s somewhat easier that way, but for the rest of our expat time, I hope to create more films that are a little more storytelling and a little less winging it.

While I’m writing on the topic of creative endeavors–I officially relaunched my photography business and created my logo.

To some people, this may not seem big or new. After all, photography has been a hobby of mine for nearly two decades. I have been capturing love stories, documenting life’s most precious moments, and photographing some of the most breathtaking places on this planet. My dream is to be a photographer for elopement weddings and capture more adventurous photoshoots with travelers in epic places around the world.
