Week 117: Skiing at Kasberg

Week 117 brought a lot of much-needed snow to Austria resulting in people heading into the mountains, including us. The mountain we chose was the Kasberg, located in the Upper Austrian Prealps 30 minutes away from Gmunden.

Like most people who live around the alps, this was our first ski outing of 2023. Typically, the Austrian ski season runs from December to April, but with the lack of snow in recent weeks, skiers and snowboarders have missed out on an entire month–until this week!

The Kasberg stands 5,305 feet above one of our favorite lakes, Almsee, where we have hiked twice in week 53 and week 59.

We were happy to be on a mountain with 14 miles of mostly beginner-friendly trails since this was our first time back on the slopes since last year. Unfortunately, thick clouds prevented us from seeing the surrounding mountain peaks, and visibility only got worse the higher up we went, but the snowy trees and fresh snow were still beautiful.

Similar to hiking in the summer, one of our favorite parts about being on the mountain is eating at the huts and the Kasberg has four mountain huts to choose from. The largest and most popular being the Sonnalm hut.

Eric and I were not the only ones having fun in the snow this week. Charlie and Daisy had a blast, too. An hour of snowballs, sled attempts, and zoomies made for some tired pups.
